Engineering Development for Improvement
We are Coining 70% of the material thickness & still holding a flatness of .0035.
Ask A Question
- Upfront engineering work and tooling design results in our ability to coin 70% of the material thickness of the part and still hold a flatness of .0035 across the entire part.
- Since the volume on this part is almost 2,000,000 pieces per year, the development as well as testing out the correct tool steels, heat treating operations and coatings was critical to produce this part with very little down time.
- During the APQP process, we were told the previous supplier because of die wear, was being forced to change punches in the die every 2,400 pieces. Knowing that had been a problem, we used our in house engineering & tooling experts to remedy those issues with our new progressive die design.
- Through significant engineering development we figured out how to flow material during the coining process and still keep the part flat within .0035 across the entire face of the part.
- We designed this die so we could do easy die maintenance and repair. We were concerned consistent tooling repair and replacement might be required because of the enormous pressure that is required to coin material that is .157 thick down to a thickness of just .050 thick.
- By using one of our 7 SERVO presses as well as spending the time up front with the tooling design, the result is an extremely flat and consistent part.
- Because of our 76 years in business, our engineering experience as well as our strong partnership with our heat treating & specialized coating suppliers we were able to dramatically increase our tooling life. We have now run over 200,000 parts with no recognizable tool wear!
- The customers lead time as well as inventory numbers have been dramatically reduced because they now release parts via Kan Ban and we are holding inventory in our 30,000 square foot finished goods warehouse.
- The end result has created significant supply chain and production security to our customer since the parts are extremely consistent, have no burrs and maintain the flatness with only a tumbling operation required.
