Filter molding is a plastic injection molding process where plastic encapsulates some form of filter material. The material could be cloth, plastic mesh, Stainless steel mesh or any type of material used for filtering. Filter molding uses a similar mold to straight injection molding as well as insert molding. Similar to insert molding tooling, in filter molds, there are areas built into the mold where the mesh filters can be placed prior to closing the mold and molding the shot. Once the filter material or multiple filter materials are set in place, then the 2 halves of the mold are closed; The plastic is injected into the mold around the cloth or mesh filter materials that will now be encapsulating the filters into the plastic.

Filter molding expands the capabilities of a basic plastic component and can help lower overall filter costs by reducing the amount of secondary operations that could be required to manufacture similar products. The filter materials are often times cloth, plastic mesh as well as mesh tubes which we manufacture in-house as well as Stainless steel mesh components.

About half of our injection molding facilities presses are verticle presses with rotary pallet tables. With rotary pallets, you oftentimes have one upper half of the mold and two lower halves of the mold. The rotary table allows you to be placing the inserts in one of the two lower mold halves while the other upper and lower half of the molds are placed together and then filled with plastic. Once the cycle is complete, the upper half of the mold lifts off, the rotary table spins and the top of the mold comes down on the second lower mold half to run the next cycle. The benefit of having two lower halves of the mold is to speed up the manufacturing process and remove the waiting time that would otherwise be required to place the insert or the filter material into the mold.

It is one of the most cost-effective manufacturing processes available to produce lightweight plastic as well as a combination/plastic components in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, using a wide variety of engineered resins.

When you add the benefits of Insert molding as well as over-molding with an engineered resin you can now accomplish many of the electrical contact and strength requirements of metal components by using an insert molded or over-molded plastic component.

The tooling is relatively inexpensive and can last for decades. Individual molds are built to create custom components to meet customers' specific CAD model designs. We can build family molds to produce similar parts that can be made from one mold by changing the inserts.
